Never far from The Var

The Var is a department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is bordered on the east by the Alpes-Maritimes department; to the west by Bouches-du-Rhône; to the north of the river Verdon by the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department; and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea.

The Var department takes its name from the river Var, which flowed along its eastern boundary, until the boundary was moved in 1860 and the department is no longer associated with the river. It is part of the French Riviera.

  • St Tropez

    Spend a day lounging by the sea at a beach club to full enjoy this glamorous town on the French Riviera, famous for its luxury yachts, chic boutiques, and lively nightlife.

  • Aix-en-Provence

    A university city and the birthplace of Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne. Plan a visit here for the best shopping near the village of Lorgues.

  • Verdon Gorge

    Enjoy a paddle boat ride and experience the turquoise-green waters of this river canyon. A great day trip from Lorgues.

  • Cotignac

    Sheltered by an impressive limestone cliff complete with troglodyte fossils, this medieval village is our favorite place to visit!

  • Salernes

    A quaint, neighboring village, located in the Bresque valley is world famous for it’s authentic terracotta tiles and lively artisanal traditional ceramics.

  • Natur Evasion

    On our last trip we found a place to rent bicycles, canoes or kayaks and explore the area surrounding the Argens river. Only 10 minutes from the Bastide!

    Committed to organic farming long before it was a trend, Carpe Diem has a reputation for producing terroir wines combining local grape varieties and the spirit of the region… also Allison’s favorite wine!

  • Maison Mirabeau

    Located in the heart of Cotignac, this tasting room features their whole range of wines, as well as a small shop offering a ‘Taste of Provence’ with a host of carefully selected and artisan pieces.

  • Château de Berne

    Located a short drive from the house, this estate features a hotel, expansive gardens and a restaurant. One of the few wineries that you can buy here in the US.

  • La Commanderie de Peyrassol

    An estate founded in the 13th Century by the Order of the Knights Templar, this delicious winery features a trail full of art installations and sculptures.
